Change of course....
So, I started this blog as a class project for one of my journalism courses. For the class, I was doing a fashion beat. This is why many of my stories have been focused on Fashion events at CSULB, my university. But, now the class is over. So now what?
Well, I'm going to do this blog the way I originally intended to. I'm going to focus more on general fashion updates, not so much "news." I think this will make it a lot more fun and interested. You'll be seeing trend reports( "Spotlight"), my two cents on what trends I like and don't like ( "Loves it" and "Hates it"), how to get the designer look for less ( "Smart Shopper") and also catching people who are copying designs ( "Got cha!"), among other features....
So, hope ya'll like it! :)

Design students prepare for Campus Couture

Senior design students are putting together their last minute touches for CSULB’s Campus Couture Fashion Show on May 7th, according to Caitlin Dorrance, senior designer.
Clothes, sewing machines and manikins, oh my! The senior design students are working on their last garments that will be used in the show. The designs range from casual wear to avant-garde styles.
“It’s like seeing your children walk down the runway,” said Dorrance.
It has been a three-year build up, according to Dorrance. She said they start working on their designs for the show in their sophomore year. They get to feature one of their pieces in the show as a sophomore, two as a junior, and 10 as a senior.
“It’s rough, expensive, no space, lots of tears, you don’t sleep,” said Dorrance. “You have to love it to get through it.”

Top 5 Summer Trends!
Ahh, Spring is in the air and Summer is on its way. I've ranted on the summer fashions I'm not liking so on a more positive note I'm going to feature my top 5 picks for summer. Also, note that the examples I chose are offered at Forever21 and Urban Outfitters, two affordable shops that can give you the look you see on a lot of designer runways. Here they go:
Theme: "Lady-like chic"
1. Floral- I'm loving the dainty little floral patterns on fabric lately. But, be sure to keep it neutral, nothing too large or bright. I love a lot of the little skirts and blouses made f chiffon material with the tiny little floral patterns. Very sweet and sexy.

2. Blouses- Forget wearing blocky tee's. It's time to bring back some femininity with a nice button down or pullover blouse. Whether it's light chiffon or sturdy cotton/poly, they give a nice shape to any woman's body. Try one with cute touches like ruffles, or interesting necklines, prints.

3. A-line skirts- I'm really feeling the skirts that start at your natural waist 9 the smallest part of your waist and drop to about mid-thigh. I think this conceals one of the major problem areas for most women (the tummy, love handles, thighs) but makes your waist look really tiny and accentuates your legs! Very pretty.

4. Lace- It has to be used in small amounts to avoid looking frumpy. But I think lace will always be a light, fresh detail to add onto any wardrobe. Whether it's a full on lace blouse or skirt or just a top with some lace trim. Maybe even some lace gloves as an accessory to spice up a plain outfit!

5. Socks with heels?- This is one trend that some people are loving and some people are hating. It has been featured in many high fashion mags as well as on store's websites. I surprisingly, like this trend. I think it gives an interesting edge to a shoe. But, for this to work it has to be a chunky shoe, like a wedge with thick straps across the foot, or a thick heel with wide leather straps. If you wear it with a dainty shoe, it looks terrible. I haven't seen ANYONE in person wearing this style. Come on people! Take a risk!

Students in Fashion take a shopping field trip
Students in Fashion had their LA Day field trip last Friday.
They started their day at the FIDM 16th Annual Art of Motion Picture Costume Design Exhibition, which featured costumes from Marie Antoinette, Atonement, The Golden Compass, Enchanted, Sweeny Todd, Elizabeth, Harry Potter and Nancy Drew.
The exhibition was followed by lunch and shopping on Rodeo Drive and Beverly Boulevard.
In the evening they attended a taping of a show called "Single White Millionaire" at the WB studios. SIF received fund raising money for every member that attended the taping. This money goes towards the annual campus fashion show at the end of this semester.

Stick-thin models and their influence on eating disorders
Ana Carolina Reston was the second model reported to die from anorexia-related complications in 2006, according to UK Telegraph.
According to the site, Reston went on a casting call in China where she was told that she was “too fat.” She then started a diet of only apples and tomatoes. This lead to her becoming both anorexic and bulimic. She died at 21 years old, weighing only 88 pounds, according to the site.
This may be shocking to some, but it is a reality amongst many girls everywhere. There are many causes of anorexia and bulimia amongst girls and women. One factor is that many young girls and women look up to rail-thin models in fashion magazines as the standard of what they should look like.
“You shouldn't have to strive to be under 100 pounds,” said Jenny Handy, a biology major at CSULB. “It's a negative outlook on what beauty is.”
